A Golden Goose, a Horse, and a Cart
"The Internet is the Goose that's laying the BIGGEST, FATTEST GOLDEN EGGS of all times – and you can get your share now!!! "How? "Easy, just follow this SIMPLE THREE-STEP PLAN and you, too, can be on your way to your first million!!!" ... What's that? You've heard all this before? Hmm, me too. Funny how it's never quite as easy as the 'gurus' make out, is it? You know what I always think? That if these people have all the secrets ... what are they doing hanging out where I hang out? Why aren't they sunning themselves on white, sandy beaches in Parts Exotic? Or entertaining the Jet-Setters on their 100-foot yachts? Or skiing wherever-it-is you ski when you have squillions? It's the ALL CAPITAL LETTER MEGA EXCLAMATION POINT set that have given Internet businesses a bad name in more conservative circles, which is a shame really, because it's a wonderful medium for business. You have the entire planet as your market, you can operate from anywhere and, if you choose your product with care, you have minimum operating costs. One of the most popular -– and profitable -– products on the Internet is information, but just how do you acquire a product that people will want to buy? Now, I'm embarrassed to say this, but, there is ... umm ... a straightforward, three-step plan that will at least get you pointed in the right direction: Step 1: Get Your Horse You'd be surprised at how many people forget this simple step and go rushing off to buy a cart without having any idea about what sort of horse will be pulling it. "First things first," my Gran used to say, so find out what people want and then set about supplying it. What do you need to know about your market? 1. How much money can they spend on your product? It's a case of the "bleeding obvious" to state that you don't try to sell $1000 products to the unemployed, so decide on the preferred income level of your market and then go looking for them. 2. How can you reach them? Look for newsletters that would interest your potential buyers such as at www.yahoogroups.com or try newsgroups and forums http://groups.google.com/ and enter searches for portal sites that focus on your chosen group (eg parent sites, student sites, sports sites etc). 3. Are they online? Since you're planning to market a digital product (trust me, this is what you're planning), it makes sense to look for a group that is actually online. Step 2: Decide Where You're Going Once you've decided on a market, the next stage is to work out what problems this group has so you can solve them. Every one of us has problems galore and we'd love someone, like you, to come up with a brilliant solution. We'd even be prepared to pay you to solve our problems for us. Can you take over some irksome task; make it easier/faster/cheaper for us to do something? Can you help us find something; sell or buy something? Can you help us make money or save money? Of course you can! Step 3: Get Your Cart Once you've settled on a problem that needs a solution, head for the Search Engines and enter searches for the problem and your proposed solution. Try www.yahoo.com , www.google.com , www.altavista.com , www.lycos.com to start with and just see how many listings they have. Don't panic if you find thousands of pages -– in fact, the more the better, because this means you've found your own Golden Goose. Think about it -– lots of results mean that lots of people have this problem, and they need someone (you) to help them sift the wheat from the chaff. The next part of this third stage is to double check how many people are really looking for help with the problem, and the Internet also provides a way to do this research. Word Tracker http://www.wordtracker.com will tell you how often people search for given keywords, and Google have a preview of their ad service which lets you test an ad and will estimate how many people will search for your keywords https://adwords.google.com/AdWords Now comes the best part -– this is where you get to show off. It's a scientifically proven fact that all human beings love to show off. OK, I lied about that part -– but you know it's true. It's also true that everyone is an expert in some field, and chances are, if you're interested in writing short stories, collecting match-box covers or travelling through wilderness areas, then others will be, too. All you have to do is create a guide to short story writing, a history of match-box covers, helpful hints for surviving in the wilderness and hey presto! So, go through all your experiences, interests and knowledge and try to come up with a list of possible projects that will help to solve the problem you identified earlier. Problems don't have to be of the life and death sort; tips on how to improve your golf/tennis/badminton etc are always popular. Think hobbies and interests; think indoors and out; think families and dating; think people and pets; think house renovations and holidays; think food and cooking; think making money and saving money. These are all areas of major interest. Don't put your cart before your horse; think market first and then think product.
